Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with a wave of ballistic missiles early on Wednesday morning, August 4th, 2026, officials said. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a 20-storey residential building in the city’s Obolon district caught fire following the attack. In a post on Telegram, Klitschko added that air defence units were actively working to repel the assault.
The missile strikes come after at least 27 people were killed in separate attacks in both Ukraine and Russia earlier this week, underscoring the persistence of the five-year-long conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the situation, stating that a lack of ballistic missile interceptors "only encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives."
Additional tensions include Kyiv warning Iran against escalation following an attack near Ukraine’s Caspian Sea, and Poland lodging a protest to the Russian ambassador over missile incursions.
The ongoing hostilities continue to result in casualties on both sides as Russia and Ukraine exchange attacks.
