On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Republican Ohio Rep. Max Miller requested the House Ethics Committee to investigate allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. Miller stated he had "absolutely nothing to hide" and sought the investigation to clear his name amid a contentious custody battle.

Miller’s ex-wife accused him of throwing hot water from a pan on her in June 2024 and spraying her with hot water from a sink hose while she was in a fetal position on the floor, according to court records. Moreno also alleged abuse against their two-year-old daughter, raising concerns about Miller’s reelection prospects in November.

A court-appointed parental coordinator, Deborah Koricke, told the court in May 2026 that she was not convinced Miller abused his then-wife and daughter. Moreno’s spokesperson, Reagan McCarthy, emphasized the priority on the safety and well-being of Moreno’s daughter and granddaughter.

Miller addressed the allegations in a livestream titled "Special Announcement" on Sunday, denying the claims and affirming his intention to remain in the race. President Donald Trump reportedly called Miller on Monday, expressing concerns about the state of his candidacy.

Following Miller’s request, the House Ethics Committee announced it is reviewing allegations that Miller may have engaged in domestic violence, abuse, or illegal drug use in violation of the Code of Official Conduct or other standards. The committee noted that the investigation and public disclosure do not imply any violation has occurred and that no further comments will be made outside committee rules.

Senator Lisa Murkowski commented that such allegations are "not what we want in our lawmakers," while Louisiana Senator John Kennedy stated the matter was "none of my business" but acknowledged it "doesn’t help."

Emily Moreno’s spokesperson, Stefan Mychajliw, accused Miller of lying about his ex-wife to save his political career and cited evidence of a history of violent behavior.

Additionally, Bernie Moreno reported picking up his granddaughter from Miller at a police station and noted Miller refused to hand over the child’s favorite stuffed bunny.
