A 35-year-old man was arrested on Monday, August 4th, 2026, at Sydney's Moore Park for carrying a fake gun, handcuffs, and wearing a fake police vest. He was released on bail after a court hearing where it was revealed he was attending a costume party.
The man, a pizza shop owner and permanent resident of Australia for 12 years, told police he was at a 'heroes and villains' themed costume party at a bowling alley and had stepped outside for a cigarette when arrested.
A police prosecutor told the Local Court that the man's appearance caused "significant fear" in the community and prompted a "substantial police response." However, when Judge Daniel Covington asked if there was evidence supporting the costume party claim, the prosecution initially said she was unaware of any such event but could investigate further.
Following a call to the officer in charge, the police prosecutor confirmed the man had informed officers about the costume party and that he "dressed as a hero." Police also reviewed CCTV footage from the time, which appeared to show people in costumes.
Judge Covington expressed caution, stating, "I'm not just going to accept it on the submissions," and paused the matter for further information gathering. The judge noted being persuaded that cause was shown for bail, mainly due to the man's lack of prior history.
The man's case is scheduled to return to the Downing Centre Local Court on August 18th, 2026.
