A new scientific review analyzing over 350 studies published in the journal Cell Press Blue suggests that targeted protein restriction may offer similar longevity and metabolic benefits as calorie restriction, without the need to reduce overall calorie intake. This finding could provide an easier path to a longer, healthier life for sedentary adults, who often struggle to maintain strict low-calorie diets.

The review found that lower protein intake was associated with improved metabolism, altered nutrient signaling, reduced cellular damage, and enhanced cellular maintenance. Much of these benefits are linked to the activation of a metabolic hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21).

Dudley Lamming, corresponding author of the paper and a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, emphasized that "it's absolutely crystal-clear that there are benefits of protein for muscle growth and exercise response of active individuals." However, he noted that since most people are relatively sedentary, many likely consume more protein than necessary, which "probably has negative health consequences."

While high protein intake supports muscle growth in active people, this new research indicates the opposite may be true for those with low physical activity levels. The findings highlight that protein needs are not one-size-fits-all and suggest reconsidering protein consumption based on lifestyle.

This review adds to previous research linking calorie restriction to improved lifespan and lower rates of age-related diseases but addresses the challenge many face in adhering to low-calorie diets by focusing on protein intake instead.
