A healthcare worker in Twin Falls, Idaho, returned fire on a 24-year-old gunman who killed three people and wounded several others at an In-N-Out Burger on Saturday, August 1st, 2026. Jordan Salinas, 35, described his impulse to confront the attacker as “automatic” and “mechanical” in an interview with the Idaho Statesman published on Sunday, August 2nd.

Salinas said he and his girlfriend had stopped at the restaurant for lunch around 2:30 p.m. before he heard gunfire and saw people fleeing. He ran toward the sound, drawing a semi-automatic pistol with a suppressor from a shoulder holster. Salinas had been seriously training with firearms since a deadly 2021 shooting at a mall in Boise, Idaho, about two hours from Twin Falls, which left two dead and four wounded.

He witnessed the attacker, later identified as Chad Williams, standing by the drive-through window and firing a rifle toward cars. Williams, 24, killed three victims before dying by suicide, according to police.

Twin Falls police chief Matthew Hicks credited Salinas and an off-duty officer with helping to drive the suspect away, preventing further casualties. Hicks said at a news conference, “We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen – and their heroic action to stop this incident.”

As of Monday morning, August 3rd, 2026, the Gun Violence Archive reported at least 280 mass shootings across the United States so far this year.
