Myanmar’s military has sharply escalated attacks on civilians since a new administration took office in the war-torn country, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED). The intensified onslaught began after Myanmar’s new military chief assumed command in late March 2026, as his predecessor prepared to become the country’s president.
ACLED reported that since the ruling junta reconfigured its military command structure in March, civilians have faced worsening repression and an intensified aerial bombing campaign. This includes the regular deployment of specialized groups of two to five jet fighters conducting sustained air strikes against single targets.
The conflict monitor compiles data from media reports, local partners, the United Nations, international monitoring groups, and local human rights organizations. A Myanmar government spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Despite the escalation in violence, regional governments have increased diplomatic engagement with Myanmar.
