CUMBERLAND, Md. — In a region known for its political divides, the America 250 parade in Cumberland, Maryland, successfully united liberals and conservatives alike in a celebration of community and history.

David Marcus, Fox News Digital columnist, attended the event on June 27, 2026, where he met local historian Al Fieldstein and Main Street manager Melinda Kelleher, who played a key role in organizing the parade. Kelleher acknowledged the challenge of bringing the community together in such divisive times but emphasized the town's efforts, saying, "We wanted an event that could really bring the community together," and noted a revitalization of downtown Cumberland.

Fieldstein shared historical context, recalling that President Benjamin Harrison walked the parade route in 1889 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Allegheny County. He also reminisced about seeing World War I veterans in past parades. When asked about Cumberland’s role in America’s 250-year history, Fieldstein highlighted the town’s pioneering infrastructure, stating, "We had the first national road, the first railroads."

The parade featured participants carrying the City of Cumberland's "America 250" banner down Baltimore Street, with community members like Jalen Grimm staffing tables during the event. The celebration underscored how small-town festivities can bridge political divides and foster a sense of unity.
