Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) have agreed to invest $6.3 billion in a new advanced image sensor semiconductor plant located in Kumamoto prefecture, southwestern Japan. The joint venture aims to begin mass production of next-generation image sensors as early as 2029.

The two companies reached a basic agreement in May to collaborate on the development and production of these next-generation sensors. This partnership marks a significant step for both Japanese and Taiwanese firms in the semiconductor industry.

The plant will be a key facility in the region, supporting technological advancement and manufacturing capabilities in Asia.
