Chuck Edwards, a Republican congressman from North Carolina, announced on August 5, 2026, that he will not run for re-election after the US House of Representatives ethics committee determined he "fostered a hostile work environment and engaged in sexual harassment" by giving gifts and lavishing attention on two young female staffers.

Edwards said he will complete his current term, which ends in January 2027. In a statement posted on social media, he said, "After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. Serving western North Carolina has been the honor of my life."

The bipartisan congressional ethics panel recommended on August 3, 2026, that Edwards face censure over its findings. If the House agrees, Edwards would have to stand in the well of the chamber while a resolution rebuking him is read aloud.

The ethics committee launched an investigation earlier this year after receiving complaints about Edwards' conduct. A report approved by both Democratic and Republican committee members stated there was "substantial reason to believe" Edwards broke House rules by singling out two unidentified aides for special treatment that made them uncomfortable and harmed relations with other employees.

While the investigation found no evidence of sexual activity or explicit advances, Edwards' behavior likely violated House rules prohibiting sexual harassment and unwanted advances.

Last week, election forecaster Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated Edwards' race as a "toss-up," indicating improving chances for Democratic challengers.
