The US House of Representatives ethics committee on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, recommended censuring Republican Congressman Chuck Edwards of North Carolina. The bipartisan panel concluded that Edwards "fostered a hostile work environment and engaged in sexual harassment" by giving gifts and lavishing attention on two young female staffers.

The investigation, which began earlier this year after complaints about Edwards' conduct, found that he violated House rules by singling out the two aides for special treatment that made them uncomfortable and harmed relations with other employees. While no evidence was found of sexual activity or explicit suggestions thereof, his behavior breached the House code of conduct prohibiting sexual harassment and unwanted advances.

The report detailed behaviors including Edwards bringing one staffer to a White House event without informing other staff, buying her flowers, and sending texts expressing excitement and a desire for the evening to be "perfect." When a senior employee raised concerns on behalf of the staffers, Edwards reportedly became angry and said she "didn't understand the unique relationship" he had with the two women.

Even after leaving his employment, one staffer agreed to a trip to Las Vegas with Edwards, stating she felt pressured partly due to his influence over her potential civil service job.

Edwards was elected in 2022 after defeating Madison Cawthorn in the Republican primary. Despite delegating most hiring to his chief of staff, he insisted on bringing "three young women" into his office.

Following the report's release, Edwards' Democratic opponent Jamie Ager said, "My heart goes out to the young women who took these roles to serve our community. We deserve leaders with the moral character western North Carolina can be proud of."
