US President Donald Trump stated that talks with Iran would take place on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, but he declined to set a deadline for reaching an agreement. Earlier, Trump said he had called off an imminent US attack on Iran as part of efforts to negotiate a deal. On social media, Trump claimed that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries requested more time to finalize a deal that would lead to the "immediate, complete and total" reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat.

Meanwhile, Iran announced it is close to reaching an agreement with Oman on a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei told state television that the deal would establish a route acceptable to both sides, respecting sovereign rights and safeguarding national interests and security. Iran also stated it has no plans to receive or send delegations for talks at this time.

In other US news, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the US health secretary, urged American parents to vaccinate their children against measles amid a surge in infections. The US has recorded 2,371 confirmed measles cases so far this year, surpassing the 2,289 cases reported in 2025.

Additionally, the family of Daphy Michel, a 31-year-old Haitian immigrant who froze to death in Pittsburgh after being dropped off by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is preparing to file a lawsuit against the US government and other entities. Michel had been jailed for six months following a reported mental health crisis and street incident, was arrested by ICE, and then released with an ankle monitor.
