Somalia is grappling with a severe hunger crisis exacerbated by climate change-induced droughts, flash floods, and a 35-year conflict that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. The Horn of Africa nation, heavily reliant on food imports, is also vulnerable to global price shocks such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

To address this, the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) is employing artificial intelligence (AI) through its hunger-tracking platform, HungerMap Live. Launched in January 2020 and publicly accessible, the platform integrates data on food insecurity, climate, economies, agriculture, and inflation to identify areas at risk of food shortages.

Although WFP cannot reach all 6 million Somalis facing hunger, AI analysis of partner-collected data helps position resources strategically before conditions worsen. An April update to HungerMap Live introduced predictive AI features and a revamped user interface, enabling governments and WFP field offices worldwide to mobilize aid proactively.

Simon Renk, head of vulnerability, analysis and mapping for WFP in Somalia, described the situation as "very gruesome" and expressed deep concern for the coming weeks and months. He emphasized the importance of shortening the time between early warnings and decisive action to protect families and individuals before crises become irreversible.

In the Burhakaba District, approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu, dangerously malnourished children are filling local medical centers, underscoring the urgent need for targeted aid.

In June, WFP and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) designated Somalia as one of the "hunger hotspots of highest concern," alongside northeast Nigeria, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, and Palestine.
