At least 35 people were killed and several others wounded when Sudanese army drones struck a traditional court in the village of Garra al-Zawaya in North Darfur state on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, according to the Emergency Lawyers group. The attack occurred around 1pm local time (11:00 GMT) while civilians had gathered to attend hearings on local cases and disputes.
The court building, which serves as a traditional institution for resolving local and tribal feuds, was also damaged in the strike. Garra al-Zawaya is located near the town of Kabkabiya, approximately 150 kilometers west of el-Fasher, the army's last stronghold in Darfur. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured el-Fasher after a bloody offensive in October 2025.
This incident is part of a broader conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since April 2023, involving RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and his former ally, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. According to the United Nations, more than 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes during the first five months of 2026 alone.
The Emergency Lawyers group has documented abuses by both sides throughout the three-year civil war in Sudan.
