Hong Kong couple Mr and Mrs Cheung, who own 14 cats and a dog, spend more than HK$10,000 (US$1,275) each month on their pets. Mrs Cheung, a pet groomer in her thirties, expressed at the annual cat expo in Wan Chai on Sunday, August 2, 2026, that “pets are meant to be spoiled rotten.”

The couple attended the event with four of their Maine Coon cats, who were dressed up and transported in a HK$4,000 stroller made in Japan. Mrs Cheung noted that while the cats enjoyed going out, they were “a bit emotional today” due to the attention from eventgoers.

During their visit, the Cheungs had already spent about HK$2,000 on cat food and snacks from brands based in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mr Cheung said they do not set a budget and are willing to purchase anything suitable for their pets. He also mentioned that they previously imported premium cat food from Taiwan and were pleased to see more Taiwanese brands featured at this year’s expo.

This spending reflects a broader trend among pet owners in Hong Kong who are increasingly investing in premium products and services for their animals.
