The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) has initiated an official investigation into its general manager, Michael Lombardi, who has been placed on leave pending the inquiry. The personnel action regarding Lombardi was announced on July 27, and the university's Office of University Counsel is currently conducting the investigation.

This development comes as the North Carolina Tar Heels football program, led by former NFL coach Bill Belichick, prepares for its second season under his leadership. Off-field issues have overshadowed the team’s football activities, with details about the investigation remaining sparse.

During a recent news conference, Belichick declined to directly address the situation or how Lombardi’s indefinite absence might impact the team. He stated, "We're at a particular time of the year now where there are certain things that are in play, and certain things that are in play that will happen later in the calendar year. So we're taking it day to day and work through the things that are on the table right now."

Belichick also expressed disappointment that the matter is being publicly discussed, emphasizing the importance of conducting the investigation properly: "But I think it's also important they do it the right way and they gather all the information they need. From our perspective, and I think there's a recognition across the board, that the university counsel's office is going to have this go as quickly as possible."

School officials formally announced on Thursday, August 1, 2026, that the probe had officially begun. The investigation follows concerns behind allegations that prompted the personnel action against Lombardi.
