In a dramatic semifinal match at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday, August 1st, the Australian netball team, known as the Diamonds, suffered a shock 46-45 loss to Jamaica. This defeat marks the first time the Diamonds will miss the Commonwealth Games gold medal match.

The match was intensely contested, with the Diamonds trailing by four points with four minutes remaining. They managed to force extra time, but ultimately fell short. Sophie Dwyer's final shot, which could have tied the game, bounced off the rim, leaving her visibly shocked. Veteran centre Kate Moloney embraced Dwyer, emphasizing that the loss was a collective team failure rather than the fault of any individual player.

Moloney reflected on the team's performance, stating, "It's a full team loss today, it's not on one person." She noted the team's struggles with miscommunication and costly turnovers in the final quarter, which began tied at 35-35 but quickly slipped away.

Defensively, the Diamonds faced challenges containing Jamaica's key players. The highest penalised player on court, with 14 contacts and five obstructions, struggled to defend goal-shooter Romelda Aiken-George. Alongside her, Sarah Klau, Matilda Garrett, and Jo Weston were unable to effectively shut down Jamaican linchpin Shanice Beckford.

Despite the setback, the Diamonds have confidence in their squad. "We have the players to get the job done, but we just didn't do it today," Moloney said. She added, "We just couldn't execute at really critical moments, and that's really important. It's something we speak about all the time and there's a few errors I'm sure we wish we could go back and take again."

Koenen, who helped Australia win gold in Birmingham, was ready to contribute despite averaging only about 25 minutes of play before the finals, bringing valuable experience to the court.
