A recent national poll commissioned by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) found that 85% of respondents view owning a home as part of the American Dream, an increase from 79% in 2013. Despite this strong sentiment, the path to homeownership in the United States has become increasingly difficult.

Housing inventory currently stands at just 1.18 million homes, even as the U.S. population has grown by 20 million. Mortgage rates remain above 6%, and rising insurance costs add to affordability challenges. These factors have contributed to the median age of first-time homebuyers reaching 40 in 2025, the highest on record.

The homebuying process culminates at closing, a moment when buyers receive their keys and begin a new chapter, symbolizing opportunity and a brighter future. Advocates emphasize the importance of legislative efforts such as the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which aims to address some of these barriers, though more work is needed to maintain momentum and improve access to homeownership.

These challenges highlight the need for continued support to help more Americans achieve the dream of owning a home.
