Newly released audio recordings from Special Counsel Robert Hur’s 2023 investigation into former President Joe Biden’s retention of classified documents have surfaced, confirming claims that Biden struggled to recall names and dates during 2017 interviews.

Following the initial report release in 2024, prominent Democrats, including then-Vice President Kamala Harris, defended Biden, labeling Hur's report as "gratuitous," "inaccurate," and "politically motivated." Harris stated at a Washington event that "the way that the President’s demeanor in that report was characterized could not be more wrong on the facts."

Hur’s report acknowledged that Biden did retain classified documents but suggested prosecution might not lead to conviction because Biden could be perceived as "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

The newly publicized audio tapes challenge the Democratic narrative surrounding Biden’s mental acuity, especially during his 2024 reelection campaign against then-candidate Donald Trump. Later that year, Biden withdrew from the presidential race following a debate performance that highlighted concerns about his cognitive state.

The audio recordings could become public after Biden’s attorneys signaled willingness to release them. Meanwhile, Democrats continue to criticize Hur, accusing him of editorializing and including irrelevant material in his report.
