Support for female emperors in Japan has reached 84%, according to a recent poll conducted by Nikkei and TV Tokyo. This reflects a significant majority in favor of allowing women to ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne.

The poll comes shortly after Japan's Diet approved a revision to the Imperial House Law on July 17, 2026. The revision permits a male-lineage male descendant from a former imperial branch family to be adopted into the imperial family, thereby making his sons eligible to succeed to the throne. However, public opinion on this adoption provision was narrowly divided, with 42% considering it appropriate and 45% opposing it.

Japanese Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Aiko, and Princess Kako were seen attending a spring imperial garden party at the Akasaka Imperial Gardens in Tokyo on April 17, 2026. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was also present at the event.
