On Saturday evening, July 26th, 2026, a white vehicle rammed into people near the southern edge of Berlin's Tiergarten park before crashing into a tree. Emergency services reported one woman killed and 16 others injured in the incident.
Authorities identified Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, as the main suspect. After an extensive search lasting nearly 24 hours, Berlin police located Ballout around 6pm on Sunday, July 27th, at an allotment garden complex in Spandau, Berlin's westernmost borough.
According to initial findings, Ballout ran towards officers armed with a bladed weapon, prompting police to open fire. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by the Berlin Fire Department, he died at the scene. Nearby residents Juliane Gotzler and Dagmar Euent reported hearing several shots and were instructed by police to remain inside their garden hut.
Germany's interior minister stated investigators believe the attack was motivated by Islamist ideology. The minister expressed condolences at a memorial service held at Berlin's Marienkirche church, noting that no other injured individuals are currently at risk of death.
The Pride event had reached maximum capacity about 30 minutes after it began, despite intermittent rain, with police limiting attendance due to security measures.
