France has experienced unprecedented wildfire damage this year, with some 115,000 hectares burned since the start of 2026, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on Sunday, July 26th. He described the scale of the fires as "far more than anything we have seen in the past."

The southwestern Gironde region has been particularly hard hit, where wildfires have forced the evacuation of 220,000 people so far. Sophie Brocas, the region's top official, warned that the situation could deteriorate further as temperatures are forecasted to rise again on Tuesday, July 28th.

Authorities continue to monitor the fires closely amid concerns over escalating heat and fire risks.
