Two firefighters have died while battling a large fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport in south-west France, officials confirmed on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026. The blaze, which reportedly started as a brush fire near one of the airport's parking lots, quickly spread to a building and remains out of control and evolving rapidly.

Social media images showed passengers disembarking from planes as thick smoke billowed nearby, causing delays to several flights scheduled to arrive at the airport. Approximately 100 firefighters, supported by specialist aircraft, are actively working to extinguish the fire.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated he was informed of the firefighters' deaths by officials in the Gironde department. During a parliamentary question-and-answer session on the same day, Nuñez said he planned to travel to Gironde "as soon as possible" to oversee firefighting efforts.

Authorities have deployed 600 firefighters and rescuers to contain the fire, and 150 people have been evacuated from the affected area.

Satellite data from the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis) revealed that over 42,000 hectares (103,784 acres) have burned in France between January and mid-July 2026, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. The Copernicus Climate Change Service noted that climate change is driving up temperatures globally, with Europe warming twice as fast as the global average.
