On July 3, 2026, President Donald Trump announced pardons for six individuals whom he described as wrongfully prosecuted for "fixing their car," referring to violations related to vehicle emissions controls. Trump characterized the prosecutions as acts of "weaponization and stupidity" by federal prosecutors. In a post on Truth Social, he declared, "I AM SETTING THEM ALL FREE, RIGHT NOW!."
The White House initially did not release the names of those pardoned. However, lawyer Stewart Cables and lobbyist Jeff Daugherty, representing five of the six defendants, identified Ryan and Wade Lalone, Matt Geouge, Tim Clancy, and Mac Spurlock as recipients of presidential pardons. A White House official later confirmed to CBS News that five additional individuals had been pardoned, three of whom were also convicted of similar pollution violations. These others were named as Joshua Davis, Barry Pierce, Aaron Rudolf, Adam Kidan, Jack Harvard, and Jonathan Achtemeier.
The pardons relate to prosecutions under the Clean Air Act for tampering with air pollution control equipment in vehicles. Daugherty expressed gratitude, stating, "Thanks to God for putting it on Trump's heart to approve these pardons, and thank God for Donald Trump." He added that Trump "is the only president who would have taken an interest in these parties, and the reason is he's the only president to face such ferocious weaponization himself."
CBS News had earlier reported that President Trump was considering pardons for a group convicted of emissions and clean air-related violations.
