Later, Malik Tillman doubled the lead in the 82nd minute with a free kick, sealing the win for the co-hosts. The dismissal of Balogun was confirmed after a Video Assistant Referee review.
This victory marks the United States' first knockout match win at a World Cup since their run to the quarter-finals in 2002. The team will next face Belgium for a place in the quarter-finals.
