The United States advanced to the round of 16 in the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Bosnia on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Folarin Balogun was sent off for a heavy challenge on Tarik Muharemovic, the U.S. held firm to secure the victory.

Balogun opened the scoring in the 45th minute by capitalizing on a deflection off Muharemovic to slip a left-footed shot under the goalkeeper. Later, Malik Tillman doubled the lead in the 82nd minute with a free kick, sealing the win for the co-hosts. The dismissal of Balogun was confirmed after a Video Assistant Referee review.

This victory marks the United States' first knockout match win at a World Cup since their run to the quarter-finals in 2002. The team will next face Belgium for a place in the quarter-finals.
