LONDON, July 1 – Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam winner and seventh seed, overcame a challenging match against Argentina's Solana Sierra to reach the third round of Wimbledon. The match ended 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(10-7) after a dramatic tiebreak on Court One.
Gauff started strong, taking the first set, but lost momentum in the second, possibly disrupted by an unusual serve that veered into the umpire's chair. Sierra, ranked 56th globally, broke Gauff early and led 4-1 before forcing a deciding set.
In the final set, Gauff saved a break point at 1-1 and delivered a powerful 124 mph serve to take the lead. Sierra responded by saving multiple break points and briefly regained the advantage at 4-3. Gauff held serve at 5-3, then broke Sierra to shift the momentum.
During the tiebreak, Sierra led 7-4, but Gauff won six consecutive points, finishing with a 117 mph ace on her first match point.
Reflecting on the match, Gauff said, "Solana played a great match and, yeah, I think it was just tug of war with us. She was hitting some big shots so I felt like a lot of times I was on the defence. I was trying to be aggressive when I could but overall just happy with my serve."
Wimbledon remains the only major where Gauff has yet to advance beyond the fourth round. Sierra made history last year as the first lucky loser to reach the women's last 16 in the Open era.
