![“Schwäbisches Donaumoos”, by nature a special western part of the natural region Donauried . The area next after Ulm / Langenau is a permanent wetland of ca. 7,5x15 km, devided by the border Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. In this area the meltwater of the pleistocene river Upper Danube transported gravel , over time forming gravel beds of enormous size, functioning as a groundwater reservoir, which kept the surface a wetland. This kind of “full water tub” contains the karst waters of the southeastern Swabian Alb, mainly from river Lone and its dry valley -tributaries. This river network meanwhile percolates ca. 80% of its precipitation underground to the wetland area of the Danube.
