SINGAPORE — Jimmy Yar Hock Long, 37, was sentenced on Thursday, August 27, 2026, to nine months in jail for pushing a 78-year-old man who later died from head injuries sustained in the fall.
The incident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. on May 25, 2025, at the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Wolskel Road. Yar was crossing the road with his father, Mr. Yar Mui Cheoh, and other family members when he saw his father being attacked by Mr. Goh Kim Ann, the deceased.
Court proceedings revealed that Mr. Goh, who was not helpless, had approached Mr. Yar Mui Cheoh, who is in his 70s, from behind and struck him on the head with an umbrella. In response, Jimmy Yar pushed Mr. Goh to the ground. Mr. Goh fell, hit his head on the pavement, and died a few days later in hospital.
The police had previously issued warnings to both men in August 2024 due to a history of altercations between them.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh acknowledged Mr. Goh's role in the incident but emphasized that the sentence must reflect that death resulted from Yar's actions. Mr. Mohyong stated that Yar intended or knew he was likely to cause hurt by pushing Mr. Goh, though the fatal injuries occurred from the fall.
Jimmy Yar pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt that turned out to be grievous. He explained that he intervened spontaneously out of concern for his elderly father's safety after the surprise assault.
