Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general convicted of genocide for orchestrating the 1995 massacre of at least 8,000 Muslims in a U.N.-designated "safe area" of Bosnia, died on Thursday, August 27th, 2026, while in United Nations custody. This massacre is considered Europe's worst atrocity since World War Two.

The news was reported by France 24's correspondent in Belgrade, Laurent Rouy. Mladic's death marks the end of a significant chapter in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Bosnian genocide.
