Three pro-Israel Democratic lawmakers have been appointed to top roles on the United States House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), a move that comes amid shifting American attitudes toward Israel, particularly among the political left.

On Tuesday, August 26th, 2026, Representative Jared Moskowitz of Florida was named the top Democrat on the committee's Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee (MENA). Moskowitz, an outspoken supporter of Israel, will replace Democratic Representative Brad Sherman of California and will play a significant role in shaping US policy in the region.

This decision has sparked criticism from some Democrats. Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian American elected to Congress, stated to Al Jazeera that “a supermajority of Democratic voters have made it clear they want to end U.S. support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and Trump’s assault on Iran.” She further criticized the Democratic leadership for elevating a "genocide denier" who positions himself "to the right of JD Vance on the war on Iran," accusing them of ignoring the party base's wishes.

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), also condemned the appointments, saying that elevating vocal supporters of funding the Israeli government’s actions to the House Foreign Affairs Committee signals that key House leaders intend to defy the will of the American people, including Democrats.

The appointments come at a fractious time for the Democratic Party, with polls indicating that most Democrats in early 2028 primary states oppose aid to Israel. Meanwhile, US Arabs are eyeing a historic Senate win for Abdul El-Sayed despite attacks from pro-Israel lobbying groups, and a California lawmaker has recently won a special election overcoming pro-Israel spending.
