The Matildas have announced they will face Colombia in two friendly matches as part of their preparation for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. The first game is scheduled for November 28, 2026, at Canberra Stadium, with the date and venue for the second match yet to be confirmed.

These matches serve as a critical warm-up ahead of the World Cup, which will begin in Brazil on June 24, 2027, and conclude on July 25. The Matildas, who finished fourth at the 2023 World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, are focused on setting up the team for long-term success amid concerns about the eventual retirement of key players such as Sam Kerr, Steph Catley, Emily van Egmond, and Mackenzie Arnold.

Heather Garriock, Football Australia's executive director of football, emphasized that the friendlies against Colombia will prioritize integrating younger players into the squad. Garriock noted, "We sat down with (coach) Joe (Montemurro) some 12 months ago when he started in the Matildas position, and we asked him what his ideal preparation was in the lead-up to the Women's World Cup."

The Matildas aim to follow the blueprint set by the Socceroos, who successfully integrated young talent into their squad before their recent tournament. Joe Montemurro's coaching style has been described as "very creative, very structured and process-driven," with a clear focus on developing the next generation of players.

Additionally, the Matildas have gained valuable insight into Colombia's playing style from their encounter at the She Believes Cup. As Lincoln stated, "Playing them (Colombia) at the She Believes Cup, we got a sense of their style, and it's an amazing opportunity to (play) that opposition."

With the A-League season underway, there are increased opportunities for local and younger players to showcase their talents and push for selection in the national team.
