BENGALURU — In response to Beijing's export curbs on heavy rare earth minerals last year, Varroc Engineering, one of India’s largest auto component manufacturers, is developing traction motors for electric vehicles (EVs) that do not require these minerals. This initiative highlights efforts by companies to lessen their supply chain dependence on China.

Arjun Jain, CEO and whole-time director of Varroc Engineering's India business, noted that the company’s growth prospects are largely driven by the electric vehicle sector. The move to rare earth-free EV motors aims to mitigate risks associated with China’s control over critical materials.

This development reflects a broader trend among manufacturers in Asia to diversify sourcing and innovate amid geopolitical and trade challenges.
