Buildings, bridges, and trucks were swept away by a gigantic mud wave cascading down Nepal's Bhote Koshi River after a glacier collapse on Wednesday, August 27th, 2026. The flooding buried entire villages, causing widespread devastation.
The source of the ice avalanche was identified as a glacier more than 5,000 metres high in the Langtang Himal mountain range, just below Langtang Lirung, the range's highest peak at 7,234 metres. NASA imagery captured after the event shows a section of the glacier, hundreds of metres across, had broken off.
Initial reports suggested an earthquake might have triggered the event. However, the US Geological Survey confirmed the glacier collapse was so large it registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event, causing the downstream devastation.
Hundreds of people have died, and at least 1,500 remain missing following the flash floods in the border region between Nepal and Tibet. Climate scientists have warned that the Himalayas are warming faster than the global average, increasing the likelihood of such large-scale events.
Historical records indicate that outburst floods and landslides have occurred in the region for centuries, with documented events dating back to 603 CE.
Experts note that melting and the formation of liquid water may have contributed to the glacier's instability, with friction and heat from the avalanche creating a valley and possibly damaging lakes along its path, funneling water into the flood.
This event echoes a similar glacier break in July 2022, when a part of the Marmolade Glacier in Italy's Dolomites broke off, killing 11 mountaineers after months of unusually high temperatures.
