UDIN DHUNGA, Nepal — On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, mudslides caused by a glacial collapse in Tibet have resulted in at least 558 people missing, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency. Meanwhile, police in Nepal reported on Thursday morning, August 27, that massive flash floods in a border area between Nepal and China have killed at least 162 people and left hundreds of tourists, workers, and residents missing.

Drone footage revealed extensive destruction, with roads destroyed and buildings buried under water described as the color of wet cement. The steep valleys in the region, vital for economic activity and travel, have been severely affected. Images from Nepal’s hard-hit Nuwakot district showed what appeared to be second floors of buildings coated in mud after the floodwaters swept through. Debris was seen hanging from tree branches and wires, vehicles were buried, and survivors were covered in mud.

The sudden floods have disrupted travel and swept through communities, leaving many unaccounted for amid ongoing rescue efforts.
