Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Dustin May had a frightening moment during the game against the New York Mets at Citi Field on Wednesday, August 27, 2026. In the bottom of the first inning, May threw a 96 mph fastball to Mets center fielder A.J., who hit a line drive traveling at 106 mph directly at May.

May attempted to turn away from the ball, but it ricocheted off him and was caught by third baseman David Hamilton, who then threw to first base to retire Ewing. Despite trying to compose himself with deep breaths and throwing a few warm-up pitches after consulting with the training staff and manager Pat Murphy, May did not feel right and was removed from the game after recording just one out.

Manager Pat Murphy had to rely on the bullpen for the remaining 26 outs. May described the experience as "definitely something I haven’t had to experience before," and noted that his condition would depend on how he felt the following day. He also expressed relief that "nothing is structurally wrong" after initial assessments.

The Brewers went on to win the game 8-1 over the Mets.
