More than 1,000 volunteers gathered on Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, to pull the historic Hirosaki Castle back to its original location after extensive renovation work.

The wooden keep, one of only twelve original castles remaining in Japan, was initially moved in 2015 to allow engineers to repair the stone base beneath it. The recent event marked the final stage of a decade-long preservation project for the 400-year-old structure.

Participants stood shoulder to shoulder along thick ropes laid out on the grass, pulling in unison to the steady beat of drums. Some volunteers wore T-shirts emblazoned with "The Return of Hirosaki Castle 2026." Officials noted that moving the castle by hand was a tribute to the craftsmanship of its original builders.
