Tua Tagovailoa's tenure with the Atlanta Falcons is facing challenges as his inconsistent play during training camp and the preseason has opened the door for Michael Penix Jr. to claim the starting quarterback position.

Tagovailoa joined the Falcons after being released by the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The Falcons initially hoped the veteran left-handed quarterback would start the season while Penix, recovering from an ACL injury, took additional time to heal and regain form under new head coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense.

However, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Falcons’ starting quarterback job is now "Michael Penix Jr.'s to lose" following Tagovailoa’s underwhelming performance, including going 3-of-5 for 22 yards in the first preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Stefanski subsequently shifted playing time to other quarterbacks Jack Strand and Cooper Rush.

"It really seemed that the goal of the entire organization was to have Tua be the starting quarterback right away to start the season," Rapoport said. "Let Michael Penix come along slow. …Really you’d like him to be inactive for the first several games and really just take his time and make sure he’s fully healthy."

Tagovailoa's play in practice and preseason has made that plan impossible, prompting the Falcons to accelerate Penix’s return. Penix has been splitting first-team reps and the team is hopeful he will be healthy and confident enough to start in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Falcons emphasize a culture of competition, with reports stating, "Everything we do around this building is competing," and "Our guys are pushing each other by showing up and putting in the work."

Michael Penix Jr., who warmed up for a game against the Minnesota Vikings in December 2024, now appears poised to lead the Falcons’ offense as the new season approaches.
