California Governor Gavin Newsom has publicly expressed strong support for Trump Accounts, an initiative launched by President Donald Trump with bipartisan backing from Senators Ted Cruz and Cory Booker. The policy creates market-indexed investment accounts starting with a $1,000 federal deposit for children born during Trump's second term.

Newsom, who is considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, described the program enthusiastically, with conservative writer Charles Hurt noting that Newsom called it "the best thing President Trump has ever done."

This unusual praise from Newsom has drawn attention and speculation about his political strategy ahead of the 2028 election. Bush White House press secretary Dana Perino commented on Fox News’ "The Five" that Newsom's remarks appear to be a calculated "2028 play," potentially giving him an advantage in future debates where candidates may be asked whether they would continue Trump Accounts.

The Trump administration recently announced a pause on over $10 billion in childcare funds to five blue states, adding context to the ongoing political discussions around child-related policies.

Conservative podcaster Chad Law highlighted Newsom's enthusiasm for the program, emphasizing the federal government's $1,000 deposit into accounts for eligible children. Perino suggested that Newsom's early support could help counter accusations of political opportunism.

Charles Hurt also remarked that Newsom's praise reminded him of previous instances where some Democrats broke ranks to support Trump’s policies, such as the "No Tax on Tips" plan.

Newsom’s endorsement signals a potential shift in his positioning as he eyes the 2028 presidential race.
