Massive flash floods in Nepal on Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, have claimed at least eight lives, with Chinese state media reporting major casualties from a mudslide at a Tibet trade hub on China's side of the shared border.

Images from Nepali police showed floodwaters surging through rivers, sweeping away houses, while AFP shared visuals of a house's top floor protruding from muddy soil. Videos circulating on social media depicted torrents of muddy water rushing through mountain valleys in the Himalayan district bordering China.

Suman Chalise, a 34-year-old teacher in Nuwakot district, told AFP, "I witnessed the flood sweep away eight or nine trucks, along with houses and people."

Nepal police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle confirmed that rescue operations are underway and noted that authorities had alerted residents near riversides to relocate due to uncertain damage extent. The Nepal Army deployed helicopters and disaster response personnel to assist in the affected areas.

The Nepal Electricity Authority reported damage to about 430 megawatts of production capacity, including hydropower and solar facilities.

Meanwhile, Sarthak Shrestha, a remote sensing and geo-information analyst at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), stated that a preliminary assessment showed "no anomalies" from China's side of the border.

This incident follows a similar event last July when 17 people went missing after a mudslide near the Gyirong Port.
