Turning 35 doesn't mean men will suddenly look older, but it marks the start of noticeable changes in the skin and body. Around this age, metabolism may slow down and testosterone levels gradually decline, impacting energy and libido. More importantly for skin health, the body produces less collagen while existing collagen breaks down faster.
Dr Melvin Tan, medical director at Epion Clinic, explains that men often neglect skincare in their twenties and early thirties because their skin is naturally thicker, oilier, and more resilient. However, by the mid-to-late thirties, the skin's natural repair process slows, making pigmentation, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and sagging skin more apparent.
"Men usually prefer something simple and want to see noticeable results," said Dr Tan. He recommends skincare with at least SPF 30 to protect against harmful UV damage and advises cleansing after workouts to remove sweat and oil.
Lifestyle factors such as late nights, smoking, frequent drinking, and sun exposure without sunscreen accelerate collagen loss. For men who have already developed significant collagen loss, sagging skin, deep wrinkles, acne scars, or stubborn pigmentation, skincare alone is unlikely to produce major improvements.
Experts suggest focusing on three key ingredients for healthier-looking skin after 35, emphasizing simplicity and effectiveness in men's skincare routines.
