At least one Australian is among hundreds reported missing following a deadly flash flood that struck the Tibet-Nepal border region on Wednesday morning, August 26th, 2026. The torrent swept through the Himalayan border area, killing at least 22 people in Nepal, according to local police.
Nepal's tourism board reported that at least 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for. The list of missing foreigners, seen by ABC Australia News, includes one Australian. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has not yet responded to inquiries.
Nepal's foreign minister stated that an earthquake caused an avalanche which triggered the flood along the Bhote Koshi river in Rasuwa district. District administrator Narendra Pariyar warned of potential heavy casualties or property loss and urged residents living along the riverbanks to move to higher ground after reports of villages and project sites being swept away.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, but Nepalese army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet said helicopters cannot land in affected areas until floodwaters recede. The government has mobilised all available mechanisms, including the army and private helicopters.
On the Tibetan side, Chinese officials expressed fears of major casualties in Gyirong county following a mudslide that hit a land crossing.
