America’s national debt has surpassed $40 trillion and could reach $50 trillion by 2030 if current fiscal trends continue, according to projections by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The CBO estimates federal deficits will total more than $23 trillion from 2026 through 2035, with an anticipated deficit of approximately $1.9 trillion in 2026 alone.
Despite the alarming figures, the national debt increase is not attributed to any single president or political party. However, Washington has yet to engage in serious debate on how to reduce the debt.
Social Security’s Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund is also facing challenges, with reserves projected to be exhausted by 2032. Analysts warn that if annual deficits average between $2 trillion and $2.5 trillion in the coming years, reaching $50 trillion in debt is a near certainty.
The situation has been likened to an approaching train, signaling an urgent need for policy changes to avoid severe fiscal consequences.
