Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed "mastermind" behind the September 11, 2001 attacks, will stand trial starting Monday, June 5, 2028, a military judge ruled on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Mohammed has been detained at Guantanamo Bay since 2003. Prosecutors had sought to hold the trial in 2027, but the judge determined that timeline was too soon.

A photo obtained from March 1, 2003, shows Mohammed shortly after his capture. The trial will address the merits of the case nearly a quarter-century after the attacks.

"Trial on the merits shall begin on Monday, 5 June 2028," stated Lt., according to the ruling.
