Ugandan authorities announced on Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, that investigations into Anita Among, the former Speaker of the House, have been dropped. Among had been confined to her home in Kampala since May following a probe into alleged misconduct, during which her Rolls Royce was confiscated.
Military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba posted on social media that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni had "instructed me to release AAA from house arrest," referring to Among by her initials. Kainerugaba added, "we shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her."
Meanwhile, Uganda's anti-corruption body spokesperson told journalists, "we have never stated anywhere that we are investigating Rt. Hon. Anita Among."
Anita Among was appointed Speaker in March 2022 and was considered a privileged member of President Museveni's inner circle. She had faced accusations of misconduct for years, which led to international sanctions by Britain and the United States. The probe against her was viewed as part of the military's increasing influence in Uganda.
