On Monday, August 25th, 2026, the United States officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, ending decades of sanctions and economic restrictions. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa hailed the move as a pivotal moment for the country, stating, “Today, Syria shakes off a dark stain and tears away a painful chapter of its past to embark on a path of development, reconstruction and rebuilding.”

In a related development, Syria’s civil aviation authority announced that Syrian Airlines will begin operating regular direct flights from Damascus to Copenhagen, Denmark, and Vienna, Austria, starting September 21st, 2026.
