A comprehensive study analyzing medical data from 10 million U.S. siblings over two decades has found significant links between birth order and long-term health risks. Researchers from the University of Chicago and Columbia University examined 569 disease categories across families and siblings, identifying 150 conditions significantly associated with birth order.
First-born children showed higher rates of autism, ADHD, and food allergies, while second-born siblings faced increased risks for migraines and substance use disorders. Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News, highlighted the value of such a large-scale research, noting it "opens a lot of questions more than it gives answers, but I think I have some answers."
Siegel explained that differences in parental attention, early microbial exposure, and maternal biological changes between pregnancies could contribute to these distinct health patterns. He suggested that first-borns' immune systems have not encountered the environment before, which may explain their higher allergy rates. Additionally, he hypothesized that parental behavior might influence the heightened prevalence of ADHD among first-borns, stating, "The parents are like hovering over them, helicoptering them ... and they don't know where to look."
Regarding biological factors, Siegel remarked, "I think the womb changes after you have your first child, and the second child gets a womb that's already been used. So therefore, it's more set for it."
This study underscores the complex interplay of environmental, biological, and social factors in shaping health outcomes related to birth order.
