Senate Democrats are pressing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the Trump administration for detailed information about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed since November 2025. Reports have emerged of food shortages, plumbing issues, water contamination, deteriorating mental health, and safety concerns on the aircraft carrier.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote to Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao expressing “serious concerns” about the extended deployment. He noted the carrier has been at sea for over 200 consecutive days, setting a record for consecutive days without coming ashore. Blumenthal highlighted reports of supply shortages, disruptions in the mail system causing care packages to be lost for months, and sailors attempting or being prevented from attempting to jump overboard.

Family members of the approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard have confronted Navy leadership over these difficult conditions, demanding information on when their loved ones will return home. A Navy official told CBS News that the Lincoln is operating in a “highly contested environment” where traditional supply hubs in the Middle East were disrupted by combat actions. The Navy prioritized mission-critical supplies such as food, hygiene items, and mail. Officials denied any increase in suicide attempts and stated the ship provides a comprehensive support network including deployment-resilience counselors, chaplains, and medical professionals.

Blumenthal warned that deteriorating morale could be a broader issue among naval vessels deployed for months supporting military operations in Venezuela and the Middle East. He cited the USS Gerald Ford’s 326-day deployment to the Caribbean Sea and Middle East as an example of extended carrier deployments becoming more common. He emphasized the significance of the Lincoln’s prolonged deployment amid ongoing military operations against Iran and the potential need for substantial U.S. naval forces in the region for an extended period.

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) joined Blumenthal in calling for increased scrutiny of conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, demanding an official bipartisan Congressional Delegation visit to conduct an oversight investigation.
