An unexpected hearing has been scheduled for Luigi Mangione in the federal stalking case, prompting speculation that the alleged assassin of the United Healthcare CEO is seeking a plea deal. Such a deal could potentially end the murder prosecution set to begin in New York state court next month.

Prosecutors and Mangione’s lawyers jointly filed a letter requesting the hearing at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 14th, 2026, in Manhattan federal court. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges related to the killing of Brian Thompson on a midtown Manhattan street in December 2024.

Rumors of a plea deal have circulated since late June, following meetings between Mangione’s defense team and federal prosecutors. Initially, Mangione’s attorneys planned to mount a psychiatric defense citing “extreme emotional disturbance” in a sealed letter to New York Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro but later withdrew that approach.
