Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley won the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, narrowly defeating democratic socialist Francesca Hong. Crowley’s victory came as a surprise after polls had shown Hong as the clear frontrunner in the final stretch of the race.

Crowley, 40, who has served as Milwaukee County executive since 2020 and previously represented an urban Milwaukee district in the state Assembly, re-entered the race after briefly dropping out about a month ago. His campaign gained momentum following an endorsement from outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers.

Crowley captured 39.8% of the Democratic primary vote compared to Hong’s 39.4%, with 98% of the expected vote tallied. His campaign and allied outside groups spent approximately $4 million on ads during the primary, more than any of his Democratic rivals, according to AdImpact.

Hong, a state lawmaker from Madison, faced increased scrutiny over her past controversial positions and concerns about her viability in the general election. Her loss is considered a setback for progressives, who have otherwise seen success in other high-profile primaries nationwide this year.

The general election will pit Crowley against Republican Tom Tiffany, who is backed by former President Donald Trump. This race is expected to be one of the marquee gubernatorial contests this fall, with the winner holding office during the 2028 presidential election.
