China is broadening its scientific partnership with Iran to include the sensitive area of rare earth elements exploration and processing. On Monday, August 12th, 2026, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) revealed a new joint workshop program with its Iranian counterpart, the Iran National Science Foundation. Rare earths, a group of 17 metals with unique magnetic and electronic properties, are vital components in modern weapons systems such as missiles, fighter jets, and radar.

The NSFC identified rare earth exploration and processing as one of five key areas for cooperation. For each workshop, China will provide 30,000 yuan (approximately US$4,200) to cover meetings, accommodation, and domestic travel expenses. Meanwhile, the Iran National Science Foundation will support international travel for Iranian participants and accommodation for Chinese researchers visiting Iran.

This collaboration unfolds amid ongoing unresolved conflicts involving the US and Israel against Iran, highlighting the strategic sensitivity of the partnership. Beijing has been increasingly cautious about transferring rare earth processing technologies overseas, underscoring the significance of this scientific cooperation.
