United States President Donald Trump reportedly executed a secret plane switch in Turkiye last month after intelligence indicated an Iranian threat to shoot down Air Force One. According to reports from The Washington Post, The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, Trump initially boarded Air Force One but was then discreetly moved into a catering truck and transferred to a smaller C-32A military aircraft that flew him to the United Kingdom.

The operation was triggered by credible intelligence from Israel about an Iranian plan to target the presidential plane with shoulder-to-air missiles. While Trump publicly stated he would depart the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8 aboard an older version of Air Force One, the Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar was used as a decoy carrying members of the press and some White House staff.

Journalists on the decoy plane reported being instructed to keep their window shades closed, raising suspicions about security concerns. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also reportedly stayed on the decoy plane, according to an unnamed US official.

The US Secret Service's use of a plane full of journalists as a possible decoy has raised ethical questions. Prominent political analyst and Democratic strategist David Axelrod told CNN, "Everyone on that plane was a decoy." Meanwhile, Ned Price, a State Department advisor during the Biden administration, acknowledged that "subterfuge is sometimes a necessary safeguard." University of New Haven protective travel expert Robert McDonald, a former Secret Service agent, noted that the use of "backup planes" to protect the president is not unusual.

The White House has not challenged these reports but responded to The Washington Post's story stating, "As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats." However, some critics argue that misleading reporters and the public is unacceptable.
